EU EXTENDED TEMPORARY PROTECTION UNTIL MARCH 4, 2028

Content

On July 15, the EU Council officially agreed to extend temporary protection for Ukrainians for another year. Currently, 4.38 million Ukrainians are under protection in the EU.

What this means for those already in Spain:

  • Protection will be extended automatically - no need to re-apply at the EU level (the procedure will be determined by each country separately)
  • Housing, work, medicine, children's education, social assistance - everything is preserved
  • No new conditions appear for you.

Important change for NEW applicants.

Men of military age who apply for protection after the decision comes into force will need to confirm legal departure from Ukraine. For example:

  • with a border crossing stamp in the passport
  • a document on deferment or dismissal from service (paper or electronic)

Once again: this requirement does not apply to those who are ALREADY under protection in the EU.

The EU is already preparing a plan for a gradual transition from temporary protection to long-term statuses. And in Spain, the path to permanent residence is already open - this was already written about in Transition from temporary protection to residency in Spain: a complete guide 2026.
