Buying a used car in Spain

Content

Buying a used car in Spain is possible for Ukrainians under temporary protection, provided that certain conditions are met and the necessary documents are available.

Required documents:

  1. A valid international passport.
  2. Foreigner Identification Number (NIE): This number is required for most official procedures in Spain, including buying a car.
  3. Proof of residence (Empadronamiento): A document confirming your registration at your place of residence in Spain.
  4. Valid driver's license: The Ukrainian ID card is recognized in Spain for a certain period, but it is recommended to familiarize yourself with the rules regarding its use and possible exchange.

Purchase procedure:

  1. Car selection: After choosing a used car from a private seller or dealer, make sure it is in good condition and has all the necessary documents.
  2. Signing the purchase and sale agreement (Contrato de compraventa): The contract must specify all the details of the transaction, including information about the vehicle, seller, and buyer.
  3. Tax payment: After signing the contract, it is necessary to pay the relevant taxes, such as Impuesto de Transmisiones Patrimoniales (ITP), which ranges from 4% to 8% of the value of the car depending on the region.
  4. Vehicle registration: After paying the taxes, you need to register the car in your name with the General Directorate of Road Traffic (DGT) and obtain a new technical passport (Permiso de Circulación).
  5. Insurance: Before using a car on Spanish roads, it is necessary to take out compulsory civil liability insurance (Seguro de responsabilidad civil).

Additional recommendations:

  • Vehicle inspection: It is recommended to check the vehicle's history, including any fines, debts or encumbrances. This can be done through the official DGT website.
  • Technical inspection (ITV): Make sure the car has passed the mandatory technical inspection and has a valid ITV certificate.
  • Contract language: If you do not speak Spanish, it is recommended that you use the services of a translator or lawyer to properly understand the terms of the contract.

Following these steps will help you buy a used car in Spain safely and legally.
